Disposable plastic gloves are part of the essential equipment to perform palpation or rectal examination in cattle, horses, pigs or other animals in obstetric veterinary techniques, artificial insemination, collection of fecal samples, pathological diagnoses, etc.
Rectal palpation has been positioned as the most commonly used method, because it is accurate, safe, inexpensive and ideal for the diagnosis of pregnancy, as well as being very useful for an early diagnosis.
Rectal palpation is a physical method used mainly for the exploration of the reproductive system of females, with which we can determine physiological states such as ovarian functionality, moment of the estrous cycle, gestation or absence of them, or pathological states such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, segmental aphasia, etc.
The examination must be carried out, for the examiner’s hygiene and safety, with a thin glove that covers fingers, hands and arms, so we must look for a glove with a length at the shoulder or above the elbow.
A successful palpation depends largely on the sensitivity in the hands that the examiner has developed, which benefits from the correct choice of palpation gloves, a thick and rigid glove will limit the correct palpation.
Inside the market we can find a variety of palpation gloves, but undoubtedly disposable gloves should be preferred, because they are normally in contact with feces, mucus, etc. which are sources of transmission of serious diseases both for the examiner and for other animals.
Within the palpation gloves we can find different materials, inside them the high quality polyethylene provides softness and optimal sensitivity, in addition this material is very resistant to the internal temperatures of the animals.
Another important point is that we must avoid breaking the glove at the time of the review, as this would cause contamination of the examiner’s hand, fingers, nails and arm, for this it is very important that the sealing of the edges of the glove is shown resistant, an easy way to identify it is that the glove has smooth, uniform and soft edges, this will give us adequate resistance to the maneuvers carried out.
In addition, it should not be overlooked that the packaging of the gloves is waterproof or resistant to water, humidity, mud, dirt, etc., because we must avoid contamination of the gloves during storage.
Finally, it is essential to emphasize that when palpating one glove per animal should be used, as this will prevent the transmission of diseases between animals such as bovine leukosis, bovine viral diarrhea, among others; in addition to diseases transmitted from the animal to the examiner such as brucellosis, among others.
